In health care, protecting the public depends on staying ready to act. In Oregon, registered nurses currently maintain competence through practice hours and topic-specific education, while home-care workers must hold and maintain a CPR and first-aid certification for the work. Here is what applies to your role — and how recognized, up-to-date, documented training meets it.

Health professionals: continuing education and up-to-date skills

The Oregon State Board of Nursing sets the terms under which registered nurses renew their licence and expects them to keep their competence current. Oregon currently requires 400 practice hours per cycle plus mandated topic-specific education — 1 hour of pain management at renewal, a one-time 6 hours, and 2 hours of cultural competency — with a general 20-hour continuing-education requirement taking effect in January 2028.

Because the present standard is built on practice hours and mandated topics rather than general CE, a CPR or BLS course does not substitute for those requirements, and any continuing education must meet the Board's criteria. Basic Life Support is, in practice, an employer and hospital requirement for many clinical roles rather than a standalone licence condition — but maintaining resuscitation skills remains part of the profession's duty to be ready to respond.

Oregon does not currently set a general contact-hour standard for registered nurses; renewal rests on 400 practice hours plus mandated topic-specific education, with a 20-hour continuing-education requirement beginning in January 2028. A CPR or BLS course does not substitute for these requirements, though maintaining resuscitation skills remains expected in practice.

The requirement is met by any recognized continuing-education activity on an eligible topic. CPR/AED, ACLS (advanced cardiovascular life support) and PALS are among the eligible activities; other topics also qualify (for example safe prescribing, suicide prevention or violence prevention). A single course therefore both meets the obligation and counts toward your hours — provided you keep the proof.

Not all activities are equal. For continuing education to be recognized by a professional order, it must meet specific criteria:

  • the relevance and quality of the content;
  • the training framework;
  • the quality of the material provided;
  • mechanisms to monitor and assess participation.

Support and care staff: a certificate required to work

A CPR and first-aid course does not replace occupational training — it is added to it. To work with vulnerable people, a valid first-aid certificate is often required in addition to your professional training.

For support staff, Oregon home-care workers (HCW/PSW/PCA) must hold and maintain a CPR and first-aid certification with a hands-on skills demonstration, and Level-1 Certified Nursing Assistant programs require current adult CPR certification. This is a standalone certificate, held in addition to occupational training, that a recognized course satisfies and that must be renewed.
